Michele Castleman
Biography
Michele Castleman—Shel—grew up by Grand Rapids, Michigan, in a house in the woods. An only child, she relied on her imagination for entertainment and she would often challenge the trees to sword fights. The trees rarely fought back, but still managed to win.
In middle school, she tried to read every single young adult and children’s book in her public library. She didn’t tell anyone, which is for the best, since she is still working on it. Now she wanders among the shelves of one of the Columbus, Ohio library branches.
Shel is a Ph.D. candidate in the Ohio State University’s school of teaching and learning, focusing her studies on middle grade and young adult fantasy literature. When she is not reading, Shel teaches children’s literature to undergraduate students. They tolerate her gesticulations and declarations of love for her favorite books and authors.
Shel also has a MFA in children’s writing from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She drinks too much coffee and tea—especially when she’s drafting a new young adult novel—which results in a lot of pacing, mumbling and the occasional giggle.
