Michael Barakiva

Biography

Michael Barakiva is a theater director, and has directed productions, workshops or readings at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Arena Stage, Williamstown Theatre Festival, New York Theater Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, New Dramatists, Roundtable Ensemble and Vineyard Playhouse, among others. He has directed original work by Wendy Wasserstein, William Finn, Bridget Carpenter, Brooke Berman and Wendy Kesselman.

Michael holds a BA in Drama and English from Vassar College, and was the Andrew W. Mellon Directing Fellow at The Juilliard School. Awards and affiliations include Resident Director at the Lake George Theater Lab, Phil Killian Fellow at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Drama League Summer Fellowship and the David Merrick Prize in Drama and the Lincoln Center Directors' Lab.

He was also featured on an episode of MTV's Made, in which he coached two high school students through the process of writing, directing and producing a play.

Michael's latest production is The Suburbs Suck, a young adult novel about coming out and coming of age in the shadow of The City. He is currently working on his next book project, a fantasy series called The Seven. Michael lives in New York City.
